TO ALL PROSPECTIVE NEW RUGBY PLAYERS

The easiest way to find out more about Rugby is to search around the internet and see what you can find.  Check out Rugby 101 on our website to get a general overview.  While these are all good tools to familiarize you with the sport, the best way is to come out for a practice or game.  All the information you need is listed on our site under schedule and practice.  Even if you don’t have a clue about rugby, come out anyway!  Most players on the team were clueless at some point.  Experience is the only real way to know if the sport of Rugby is right for you!

Rugby is a challenging contact sport that attracts people of many athletic backgrounds. Skills in soccer, wrestling, track, football, and many other sports translate to the various positions. The 15 positions demand players of all sizes and skills. All that is needed to play is a willingness to learn new skills, commitment, heart and determination.

Practice is held every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:45-9 pm at our home pitch:

Season

The goal of every season is to compete for a national title in Division III Rugby.  It all starts during the Fall Season.  The basics of a rugby season are a Fall and Spring season.  The fall season focus is being one of the top two teams in our rugby union.  The spring season is for the playoffs or tune up (fun) matches for the next season.  Each season consist of 8-10 games. 

Equipment

Practice: a pair of rugby shorts or regular shorts, a sturdy shirt, socks (available through the club), cleats and a mouth piece.

Game: a pair of Black rugby shorts, *Team Jersey, socks (available through the club), cleats and a mouth piece.

*Team Jersey is provided for by the club.

Financial Requirements

Newport News Rugby Club does require dues (money) in order to play.  These dues cover operating costs such as training equipment, referees, rugby union and insurance fees, balls and after match hospitality.  The dues are paid once a season. Remember there are two seasons.  New members receive a discount to help off set your other costs such as rugby shorts, cleats, etc.
